Following the incessant road mishaps in some Communities in Awgu LGA Enugu State, the Special Assistant to the Governor, Hon. Barr. Henry Okeke on has organized a Safety Sensitization Workshop for Commercial Motorcyclists in a bid to saving the lives of the rural dwellers.
The event which took place on Thursday at the Okuku Izu hall, IHE Awgu local government, was aimed at providing enlightenment needed for Public Safety interventions in Enugu rural communities where Commercial Motorcyclists activities are predominant.
According to Barr. Henry Okeke, who doubles as the Coordinator, Enugu Safety Group, ” 90% of our people in the rural areas depends on commercial Motorcyclists to carry on their daily activities. Obviously, 89% of road mishaps in our rural communities involves Commercial Motorcyclists “
He added that the Safety Sensitization Workshop was to impact practical knowledge on the people in order to have them as Safety Partners and life Savers.
Barr. Okeke further reiterated Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s readiness to developing more rural roads, hence the need to instill a Safety Mindset in the rural road users.
Delivering the lecture on the topic “Rural Transportation: A critical look at the Safety of Exposed Communities” the Federal Road Safety Public Enlightenment Officer, Route Commander Azubuike Oti, emphasized the need to checkmate reckless driving and over speeding by Okada Riders.
While delivering the lecture titled ” Impact of Drug Abuse in the life of an Okada Rider”, NDLEA Area Commander Awgu Zone, Iliya Ishaku x-rayed in practical terms the dangerous effect of illicit drugs to the participants and warned them to desist from such a bad habit.
On his part, the divisional Police Officer Mbanabo Police Division, SP Igele John who delivered the paper titled “Community Police: The Role of Okada Riders in Intelligence Gathering “, appealed to the participants to cooporate with the Police and other sister security agencies in intelligence gathering considering the essential service provided by Motorcyclists.
Expressing his gratitude to the Enugu Safety Group, the Chairman of Awgu LG Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe GN Ekoh stated that the Safety Sensitization Workshop is long over due considering the frequent cases of road accidents involving mostly motorcycle operators.
Igwe Ekoh advised the Commercial Motorcyclists to put into effect all they have learnt.
Expressing the state government’s committment to the safety of Ndi Enugu, the state Governor, Rt. Hon. Dr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi represented by the Secretary to the state government, Prof. Simon Ortuanya, commended the Enugu Safety Group for their timely Intervention and assured of the government’s support all the time.
In a key note address, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Transport Enugu, Hon. Ogbonna Idike engaged the participants on the need to imbibe safety standard in their transportation business emphasizing on the need for the safety sensitization workshop to be held across the State.
Highlight of the workshop includes, Free Medical outreach, presentation of Free Safety Reflective Jackets to the Participants , issuance of Certificate of Participation to the Participants amongst other side attractions.
In an interview with Daily Star Online News, some of the participants expressed their joy and gratitude to the Enugu State Governor, Rt. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for approving the Safety Sensitization Workshop aimed at saving their lives and that of their customers.
