Member representing Enugu North and Enugu South Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ofor Chukwuegbo, has urged #EndSars protesters in Enugu to embrace dialogue while condemning killing of unarmed protesters in different parts of the country by security agents.
In a public statement he released in Enugu on Thursday, Hon. Chukwuegbo lamented the use of live bullets on unarmed protesters, in some parts of the country allegedly by some soldiers, saying it was crude and uncalled for.
He praised the presence of mind and resilience of Nigerian youths whom he observed had made supreme sacrifices for the enthronement of civilised law enforcement in the country.
With regards to Enugu state, Hon. Chukwuegbo argued that it was unhelpful and indeed counterproductive for protesters who had presented a set of demands not to give government the opportunity to implement the needed changes which the state government had accepted to put in place.
He was also worried that some unwholesome elements had apparently infiltrated the ranks of the original #EndSars protesters.
Hon. Chukwuegbo extolled Governor Ugwuanyi’s timely inauguration of a judicial commission of enquiry on police brutality and extra judicial killings in the state, saying it had demonstrated his commitment and sincerity of purpose as a leader who matched his words with actions, without playing to the gallery.
“Nigerians are united in condemnation of excesses of defunct SARS and also the fact that policing has to have a human face because laws are made for man, and not the other way”, he submitted.
” But it certainly makes common sense to give the government the chance to implement the litany of demands by the protesters and then see what happens”.
Prince Chukwuegbo was pained that critical public infrastructure and precious private possessions had been targeted of recent by certain persons hibernating within genuine protesters, while urging the organisers to halt the exercise to put a stop to this ugly scenario, particularly as issues canvassed were receiving the needed attention.
“Grievances have been well articulated but how are remedies to come side by side these continuous breaches of the peace?”, he asked.
Hon. Chukwuegbo urged Enugu residents to stay united and adhere strictly to the curfew announced by the Enugu state government within the Capital Territory Area, so that peace and tranquillity for which Enugu state is known, can be restored, without further trauma for residents.
Long live Enugu North and Enugu South Federal Constituency!
Long live Enugu State!
Long live Nigeria!
